Nishit Gupta, the designer behind Fastener Block, explains that the inspiration for this design came from the need to counteract the overexposure of children to technology. During the 14-week design process at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, Nishit Gupta conducted extensive research to identify the right problems to solve and understand how to boost fine motor skills for 3-5-year-olds. This research informed the unique properties and features of Fastener Block.

One of the challenges faced during the design process was considering the needs of both children and their parents. While children are the primary users, parents are the buyers. Therefore, Fastener Block was designed to appeal to both audiences, ensuring it meets the requirements of both playfulness and practicality.

Fastener Block has been recognized for its excellence in design and functionality. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Toys, Games, and Hobby Products Design category in 2019.
